Green IT pays off: INFO AG lowers energy consumption by 20% and saves costs

Security, availability and economy – those were the demands placed on IT until now. Yet increasing volumes of data on the one hand and escalating costs of energy on the other, together with a conscious awareness of the global climate catastrophe, have assured that a new concept has advanced into IT strategy: the concept of sustainability. And in the process it is emerging that efforts towards reducing energy consumption at data centers signify both ecological and economic sustainability. INFO AG, based in Hamburg, Germany, has demonstrated this in an exemplary manner. Its activities towards optimizing energy efficiency resulted in an energy savings of around 20 percent.

Data protection experts compete with both hackers and politics

In Q1 2010, data mishaps or breaches of privacy policy increased by 40 percent compared to the prior-year period, according to Projekt-Datenschutz.de. Increasingly, companies can find themselves caught in a legal gray area, either by failing to adjust processes and systems to recent legislative changes or by being too slow to take precautions against the latest hacker tools. As a service provider offering a highly integrated IT security management system, INFO AG helps its enterprise customers stay both legally and technologically up-to-date.

Companies that source and operate their IT from an external service provider are primarily concerned with keeping costs low and focusing on their core business. Accordingly, such companies also expect their outsourcing partner to handle their data protection workload. "Since we offer shared services for many different companies, this enables our customers to work more efficiently than they would if they operated their own server farm,” explains Ralf Singer, IT Security Specialist at INFO AG. "This approach also applies to data protection: we can consolidate know-how and have a set of standardized processes available. This means we can implement practical solutions for IT-related legislative changes and countermeasures to current threats at short notice. As one example, we can rapidly implement countermeasures to new viruses for all our customers," Singer adds. Companies can thus reduce the risk of lagging behind legally or technologically, while markedly reducing the workload for their own data protection staff.

German companies backtrack away from offshore projects

German companies are distinctly more satisfied with their native IT service providers than with exotic offshore providers. According to a survey conducted by Harvard Business Manager, domestic (onshore) providers are receiving better marks, especially in terms of communication and coordination. Evaluating the same way marks are given in school, IT experts have awarded local service providers with a respectable “good”. In contrast, farshore providers, for instance from China or India, are being evaluated as “sufficient”. For a large majority of German decision-makers in IT, an initial phase of euphoria regarding supposed cost savings overseas has meanwhile been followed by disillusionment. Native providers like INFO AG are profiting from this.

IT service provider INFO AG sends growth signals for 2010

The Hamburg company INFO AG is on a solid growth course. For the concluded fiscal year 2009 the IT service provider reported an earnings plus of 35 percent (EBIT) in comparison to the preceding year. The EBIT margin rose 6.6 percent above the average for the industry, while turnover amounted to 82.3 million euros. With over 500 employees on staff, INFO AG forecasts continuing major dynamics in business, above all in IT outsourcing and IT consulting for mid-sized enterprises.

This above-average growth has also precipitated a necessary upscaling of personnel. The company is going to create 100 additional new jobs by the end of the year, bringing the number of gainfully employed to over 600 within the corporate group. The stated goal at INFO AG is to advance into the top 10 largest independent IT service providers for mid-sized companies in the next 3 years.

In the process INFO AG is banking on its more than 25 years of expertise in the stewardship of medium-sized firms, as well as on the matured customer relationships in the metropolitan Hamburg region. “As an independent full-scale service provider, we offer our customers not only consulting for IT, we assume operational responsibility for their IT systems, too,” explains Thomas Stoek, a member of the board at INFO AG. “By doing so we cover the international requirements for service that our national customers demand.” Accompanying these customer projects abroad supplies an impulse towards growth as well. As a result INFO AG continuously adapts its spectrum of services offered to its customers’ rapidly changing needs.
